California’s Dental Laws Have Become Stricter on DIY Orthodontics

California has recently passed laws to better regulate the way DIY orthodontics companies conduct their business. New measures include requiring X-rays and bone imaging before orthodontic procedures, requiring orthodontic professionals to provide their information and dental license number if a patient asks, and forbidding professionals from making patients sign agreements not to make complaints about their services.

These measures were added in the wake of controversy about DIY orthodontics services and how they have impacted unfortunate customers. There have been multiple instances of DIY clear aligner users damaging their teeth, gums, and jaw because of inadequate preparation and evaluation before braces were applied. In response, several dental organizations such as the American Dental Association have warned of the dangers of moving teeth without proper dental supervision.

Moving teeth is a risky procedure, and knowledgeable dental professionals are the only people qualified to assess whether or not you are a good candidate for clear aligners. Clear aligners may not even be effective if your teeth require a different type of brace to be adequately straightened.
